Cutlery and its history

The spoon, as well as the knife, were one of the first utensils that man created for his civilization and they went hand in hand with the hunting tools to improve their practices. From splintered wood to bones or stones, the cutlery has gone through different materials.
Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used to have a bowl with flavored water at their side to clean their fingers at banquets, since it was eaten with the hands. The napkins were a kind of canvas, which looked like towels. In the sixth century B.C. C., were used as bags to take away the surplus from dinner. They were folded in 26 ways, in the 17th century. In the 18th century, they were used to clean cutlery as well. The appearance of the fork made the napkins smaller.
It is believed that it was the court of Byzantium that invented the fork, and that it was Theodora, the daughter of Emperor Constantine Ducas, who brought this habit to Venice when she married Doge Domenico Selvo, but the fourchette was relegated to historical oblivion until the 18th century. XVI.
In Italy, on the other hand, it was more successful, perhaps because it is more difficult to eat spaghetti by hand than with the help of a fourchette... but in the end, using cutlery would be part of the nobility and a higher status at the time.
The first metal utensils were made of copper and its alloy with tin, bronze, but without a doubt, the ones that stand out in sophistication and prevail over time are silver cutlery and at Hotel Geneve we have a collection of pieces As part of our museum... which made up a French travel case.
